Healthy Habits For Life

Jack Russell Terriers are generally robust, active dogs, but their long-term health depends on consistent care, balanced nutrition, and regular exercise. Understanding their needs helps prevent common issues and supports a happy, energetic life.

Grooming

Jack Russells are low maintenance but benefit from regular care. Brush weekly to remove loose hair and check skin, brushing more often for rough coats. Bathe only when necessary using a mild dog shampoo. Trim nails every 2–4 weeks, clean ears monthly, and brush teeth several times a week to prevent dental disease.

Nutrition

Feed a complete, balanced diet appropriate for your dog’s life stage. Puppies need small, frequent meals for steady growth, while adults thrive on two measured meals daily. Avoid overfeeding, as Jack Russells love food and can gain weight easily. Fresh water should always be available.

Exercise Needs

Jack Russells have high energy levels and require daily physical and mental activity. Aim for 60–90 minutes of exercise each day, combining walks, play, training, and enrichment games. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for this intelligent breed.

Common Health Issues

The breed is generally healthy but may be prone to patellar luxation, certain eye conditions, dental crowding, and joint disorders such as Legg Calvé Perthes. Skin sensitivities and parasites can also occur. Maintaining a healthy weight greatly reduces strain on joints.

Exercise keeps them balanced

Physical activity plus enrichment games reduces boredom behaviours like barking, digging, or chewing — and keeps their mind sharp.

Preventative Care

Annual veterinary check ups, vaccinations, deworming, and flea and tick control are essential. Keep your dog lean, active, and up to date with preventative treatments. Early detection and routine care play a major role in ensuring a long, comfortable life.
